Artist's Comments

First generation immigrants -----you know this well if you are one----- move in a world between what they were and what they will become. Having uprooted themselves from their well-known spaces, they seek new roots in unknown lands. But while such roots start to grow, great perils arise. This "nowhere land", which is the place inhabited by them during the first years of their arrival to countries such as the USA and Canada, is deep in ambivalence. It allows for the greatest of gains ---not simply monetary--- and for the greatest of losses as well. Do you see they are much like artists?

But I guess many might not know what this feels like. When people respond; "My grandparents were immigrants", they miss the point. So you can do the following exercise in imagination, although it is VERY inadequate. Have you ever tried learning a new language and going to your first few classes? Immigrants face this daily, but with radically higher complexity. Did you feel the fear of not knowing? Did you feel the fear of making a mistake? Did you have a caring and truly understanding teacher? Did you feel how relaxed it was when you finally went outside the classroom? Well, immigrants cannot leave the classroom.

(If you are interested in immigrants ---as I deeply am---- you might want to see the stunning documentary: Wetback: The Undocumented Documentary [link]

I assure you, you will understand the gap between rich and poor countries much better than you think you do. For the gap is not a question of numbers, but a question of people. )

Life is just waiting around for the next disaster. The only consolation is, one of these times it'll be fatal.

Lovely picture, and interesting thoughts. I admit I really don't know too much about immigrants. I really don't envy their position though, I don't know if I could hold up. I'm already freaking out about a new school in a new state that I have to go to, and I speak the language fine.

Why does my heart cry?
Feelings I can't fight.
Your free to leave me
But just don't decieve me,
And please
Believe me when I say
I love you.

Thank you Volker. Immigrants deserve great recognition. This is what moved me to take this photo. In Germany specially the situsation is quite complex. :-)

“if ... I say that this happens to be the greatest good for a human being, (that) the unexamined life is not worth living for a human being ---you will believe me still less. But it is so, though to persuade of it is not easy.” Socrates

I am glad this photograph and the words touched you. You know, the ideals for immigrants here in Canada and in the USA are so different. The contrast between "melting pot" (USA) and "multicultural mosaic" (Canada) has a lot of validity to it. I hope your change of State goes well! :-)

Thank you Heidi. :glomp: It must have been an incredible story. I truly believe that the models in the USA ('melting pot') and Canada ('cultural mosaic') are quite different, each with its own dilemmas.
